In 1936, during the Africa Campaign, Emilio (Marco Fiore), a ten-year-old boy, lives in a small Italian town under the fascist regime. His father (Edoardo Pesce), the town’s mayor, wants to educate him to become a devoted baby-sitter for the regime. However, Emilio prefers to take refuge in the world of fantasy, inspired by the readings of Emilio Salgari, and imagines to live extraordinary adventures.
His life changes when an Ethiopian warrior, Abraham Imirrù (Gabriel Gougsa), is captured and locked in a birdhouse in the garden of his home. For Emilio, Abraham becomes his hero, Sandokan, and a friendship is born between the two that challenges the social and political conventions of the time. Despite the rampant xenophobia and hostility of adults, Emilio and Abraham share moments of complicity and discovery, offering a vision of hope and humanity in a period marked by hatred and discrimination.
